In the Commission's consultations with people who experience mental illness and their carers, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is often raised. People want to know how mental illness (called psychosocial disability by the NDIS) fits into the scheme and what they can do to access the package of supports they need.

In response to your questions, the Commission’s new webpage ‘Navigating the NDIS’ brings together the best, clearest and most relevant information out there. It also includes information for service providers.

All information has been grouped into topic areas.  For individuals, carers and families, these are:

  • How to access and use the NDIS
  • Information for families and carers
  • Buying goods and services
  • Complaints
  • Understanding issues with the NDIS rollout
  • Staying up to date

For service providers, the resources are grouped by:

  • Transitioning to the NDIS
  • Helping clients access the NDIS
  • Understanding issues with the NDIS rollout
  • Legal obligations
  • Handling complaints
  • Staying up to date

NSW Mental Health Commissioner Catherine Lourey said while the NDIS website is the first stop for people wanting information about the Scheme, she hopes the new webpage will be a useful additional resource.

“People who have mental illness and their families and carers often tell us they are concerned or confused about what the NDIS means for them,” Ms Lourey said.

“Mental health service providers are also grappling with huge changes.

“We hope by collating all these resources about the NDIS into one spot, we can help people understand and cope with the changes that are happening.”

If you have a resource that could help people with mental illness, their family and carers, or a mental health service provider understand and adapt to the NDIS, please send it through to mhc@mhc.nsw.gov.au
