The NSW Mental Health Commission has published a new resource to help Vietnamese speakers in our community learn more about mental health medications.
The Commission has worked with Vietnamese community leaders, health professionals, translation experts and community members to adapt and translate the Commission’s existing English-language discussion guide about mental health medications for Vietnamese speakers in NSW.
The postcard-size guide aims to help community members be more informed and feel more confident talking to health professionals about how medication may impact on their recovery from mental health issues. It includes questions that community members can ask their doctor, pharmacist or other health professional. The questions cover topics such as medication side effects, costs, and treatment options other than medication.
The Commission adapted the resource based on feedback we received during our visit to the Vietnamese speaking community in south west Sydney in 2017.
“Individuals, families, community groups and health professionals all told us that Vietnamese speakers in our community want more education and support on mental health issues, and one of the best ways to do this is to make information available in Vietnamese,” said NSW Mental Health Commissioner Catherine Lourey.
“We have listened to that feedback and worked with local leaders and experts to turn our existing resource about mental health medications into Vietnamese.
“I hope the discussion guide not only helps Vietnamese speakers chat to their health professionals about medication, but more importantly, supports them to be actively involved in all decisions about their own or their family’s mental health care.”
The Commission will distribute the Vietnamese medication discussion guide via key community leaders and organisations. These include the Vietnamese Australian Welfare Association NSW, Australian Vietnamese Health Professionals Association NSW, and South Western Sydney Local Health District.
