Find out how often Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) mental health care in NSW is used, and how this relates to factors such as gender, age and region, using the interactive graphs below.

When interpreting this data it is important to note two things. Firstly, this data cannot tell us the reason behind any pattern of findings. For example, people who live in more disadvantaged areas tend to be more likely to be receiving mental health care than people who live in less disadvantaged areas. From this data we cannot say whether disadvantage leads people to access mental health care, accessing mental health care leads people into disadvantage, or some third factor tends to lead to both.

The second thing to keep in mind is that MBS and PBS data collections do not cover all instances of mental health care. For example, care accessed via most Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations or paid for entirely privately is not captured in these datasets. A full description of the methodology behind this data is available at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) website
